Tabletop CNC Lathe

Design of a 2-axis tabletop CNC lathe suitable for educational purposes and small prototyping applications, in a group of 5.

Constraints

  • Should have enough power to machine materials such as aluminium alloys and polymers

  • Should be able to accommodate cylindrical bar up to 40mm in diameter and 60mm in length (of which 20mm is used for clamping the component in the chuck)

  • Specified maximum deflection at cutting edge, cutting velocity, depth of cut and feed rate

  • Size of 625x250mm maximum

Design Process

All calculations were made on shared Excel sheets

  1. Calculation of cutting forces and total deflection at cutting edge to select suitable hollow spindle inner and outer diameters

  2. Deep-groove and angular ball bearing selection from NSK catalogue as well as selection of X and Z-axis translation tables rails and carriages

  3. Calculation of axial loads about to tables to select suitable lead screw, mounted ball bearings and nuts

  4. Selection of both spindle and table motors from the Maxon catalogue using a speed-torque diagram and after choosing an appropriate speed ratio of 3

  5. Pulley, belt and key selection using an estimated inter-shaft distance and chosen coefficients
